Myofunctional therapy is a therapeutic program that uses a series of customized exercises to target and retrain specific muscles of the mouth, tongue and surrounding facial structures, on a neuromuscular level, that are contributing to oral dysfunction and suboptimal breathing patterns, including sleep disordered breathing (SDB). Kind of like physical therapy for the mouth, tongue and surrounding facial muscles to correct oral dysfunction, poor breathing patterns and habits that negatively impact overall health for both children and adults. Some common (but not limited to) orofacial myofunctional disorders (OMD’s) include: · Mouth breathing · Open mouth posture · Snoring · Teeth grinding · Low tongue posture · Tongue thrusting · Improper chewing patters · Improper swallow patters · Restricted oral ties · Noxious oral habits such as thumb sucking, nail biting, sucking on clothing Another key component to therapy is retraining nasal breathing. Myofunctional therapy helps to support airway health by strengthening the appropriate muscles. Myofunctional therapy is also billable by most health benefit plans when provided by a registered dental hygenist. Some common signs of sleep disordered breathing (but not limited to) include: · Snoring · Restless sleep · Clenching and grinding of teeth · Sleeping in odd positions - Hyperactivity · ADHD like symptoms · Headaches · Poor focus · Always feeling tired · Chronic congestion · Bedwetting · Dark eye circles Myofunctional therapy is a crucial component to restoring function, in collaborative care for oral tie releases. Therapy should be started prior to the release and continued afterwards for optimal results. Additionally, myofunctional therapy is an overlooked component to tonsil and adenoid removal surgery.
